The modern commercial kitchen is a fast-paced, \u2018in the deep end\u2019\u00a0environment. Learning how to use appropriate equipment before\u00a0arriving here is vitally important for hospitality students.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s for this reason that Genesis Christian College recently upgraded their teaching\u00a0kitchen facilities.<\/p>\n

The independent co-educational Queensland school\u2019s aim is clear \u2013 to \u201clight the\u00a0fire\u201d in students so they develop a hunger and passion for learning that lasts a\u00a0lifetime. With the new development this lifetime of learning can begin in the best\u00a0possible way.<\/p>\n

The old teaching kitchen was gutted and an extension added to double the\u00a0teaching space and dining areas. Importantly, it was fitted with all new equipment to\u00a0Queensland\u2019s commercial kitchen specifications. The refurbishment began at the\u00a0start of October 2014 and the new kitchen opened for full operation in May 2015.<\/p>\n

The new kitchen now provides the opportunity to run large cooking demonstrations\u00a0and classes using the demonstration bench, over-bench cameras and a roving\u00a0microphone and speaker system.<\/p>\n

In 2016 the college will introduce a Certificate II in Hospitality as a\u00a0subject option – meaning installing the right equipment was even more\u00a0important.<\/p>\n

Fiona Hogan, Home Economics and Hospitality Subject Coordinator,\u00a0believes this installation has been a great success. \u201cThe blast chiller,\u201d\u00a0she says, \u201cincreases the products students can complete in a practical\u00a0lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n[\/spb_text_block] [spb_image image=”1925″ image_size=”full” frame=”noframe” intro_animation=”none” animation_delay=”200″ fullwidth=”no” lightbox=”yes” link_target=”_self” caption_pos=”hover” width=”1\/3″ el_position=”first”] [spb_text_block title=”IN THE KITCHEN” animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”2\/3″ el_position=”last”]\n

As part of the refurbishment the college installed a Blue Seal<\/a><\/span> oven\u00a0range, Wexiodisk<\/a><\/span> passthrough dishwasher, a Friginox<\/a><\/span> blast chiller and\u00a0a Convotherm<\/a><\/span> combi-steamer.<\/p>\n

This equipment is used to produce a wide variety of food, including\u00a0baked goods, pastries, cakes, desserts, main meals, salads, soups and\u00a0canap\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Genesis Home Economics and Hospitality Subject Coordinator Fiona\u00a0Hogan says, \u201cThe kitchen has been designed specifically to teach\u00a0hospitality students using industry standard equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n
