Burgers in Cafes

If you believe the stories, more foods were invented at the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair than any other event in history. Hot dogs, peanut butter, iced tea, club sandwiches, cotton candy, and ice cream cones were all first served on that day. Of all the foods to be popularised and invented at the fair, the hamburger is the most famous and delicious.

Like a primetime sitcom, the hamburger has since spawned many spin-offs – one of our favourites is the slider. To celebrate burgers and sliders, and the Merrychef e2s range, we’ve put together some fun facts and a mouth-watering recipe to finish.

Burger and slider facts to whet your appetite with

For those unfortunate enough not to have tried a slider, they’re essentially mini burgers. In case you didn’t know:

  • Some believe the term slider comes from the navy where greasy burgers could be ‘slid in’ easily.
  • Others say the name comes from the way the patties slide across the griddle during the cooking process.
  • The most popular theory, however, relates to how easy sliders are to eat because of their small size. They simply slide down.
  • On the other end of the scale, the world’s biggest burger weighed 1,164 kg. The record was set in Germany in 2017.
  • One of the world’s most expensive and delicious burgers features a Kobe Wagyu beef patty from Japan, Beluga caviar, Canadian lobster as well as black truffle and edible gold leaf. The Glamburger, from London, comes with a hefty $1,768 price tag.
  • 60 per cent of sandwiches sold worldwide is actually burgers.
